The Last of Us was confirmed for a third season in April 2025 while Season 2 was still airing; Season 2's finale arrived in May 2025. Co-creator Neil Druckmann will step away from the show to focus on a new game at Naughty Dog, leaving Craig Mazin to oversee the adaptation going forward.

Production on Season 3 began in early March 2026 and the shoot is expected to last most of the year, with some reports suggesting a November wrap. Because this will be the longest shoot so far, and possibly include more episodes, post-production could be extended; a May or June 2027 premiere remains possible if the series follows previous gaps, though a fall, winter, or even early 2028 debut has also been suggested.

Storywise, the show has already moved beyond the first game and leaned into The Last of Us Part II’s structure. Season 3 is expected to keep its initial focus on Abby, recounting recent events from her point of view, while Ellie may have a reduced role at the start before returning later to complete the arc faithful to the games.
