The Man in the High Castle is now streaming on Netflix, but the series is at its best in its first two seasons. While the show ran four seasons, its richest character work and emotional payoff largely conclude by the end of season 2. Creator Frank Spotnitz establishes the alternate history with a chilling opening: a map of the United States split between the Greater Nazi Reich and the Japanese Pacific States, a Neutral Zone along the Rockies, and a propaganda short set to a warped version of “Edelweiss.” The series spends substantial time in both the Reich and occupied San Francisco, exploring how easy it is to accept a brutal status quo when it benefits you.

Key storylines in those early seasons are tightly drawn. Juliana Crain’s discovery of a mysterious newsreel and her hunt for the Man in the High Castle set off a chain of events that devastates her boyfriend Frank Frink.
