The Matrix 5 Is Being Written, Says Drew Goddard

The Matrix 5 was announced in 2024 with Drew Goddard attached as writer and director. Goddard's credits include The Martian, Cloverfield and World War Z. There have been no major updates until now.

Goddard told ScreenRant the fifth installment is "still in the works." He added, "I'm in my writing cave writing. I don't know how long I'll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I'll have news to share."

The Matrix franchise, led by Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, holds a notable cinematic and cultural legacy. The first film introduced ideas like taking the Red Pill and the phrase "a glitch in the matrix," and it changed action filmmaking with the "bullet time" technique.

The 2021 revival, The Matrix: Resurrections, received mixed reviews and earned a 63% Rotten Tomatoes score. It made $160.2 million worldwide and did not recover its budget. The Matrix franchise is available to stream on HBO Max.
