A sequel to The Matrix announced in 2024 has been quiet since its debut, but director Drew Goddard says the project is real and currently being written. "[The Matrix 5 is] still in the works. I'm in my writing cave writing. I don't know how long I'll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I'll have news to share," he said.

The original 1999 film, written and directed by the Wachowskis, introduced Neo—played by Keanu Reeves—as a hacker who learns the world is a computer-generated simulation. The movie reshaped modern science fiction and action cinema with its martial arts, innovative "bullet time" effects and a blend of shootouts, post-apocalyptic grit and philosophical themes.

The franchise produced two sequels in 2003 and returned most recently with 2021's The Matrix Resurrections, which took a meta approach and received a mixed response. The next installment will be the first Matrix movie not helmed by the Wachowskis, with Goddard taking over the franchise.
