'The Mummy 4' directors confirm Tomb of the Dragon Emperor isn't canon
Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the duo known as Radio Silence, said the events of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor will not be taken into account for the new sequel. When asked about the third film, Bettinelli-Olpin replied, "Well, Rachel is in this one." Gillett added, "That should answer the question for you."
Tomb of the Dragon Emperor had replaced Rachel Weisz with Maria Bello, was the only entry of the trilogy set outside of Egypt, and did not include franchise regulars Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) or Ardeth Bey (Oded Fehr).
The upcoming film will reunite soldier-of-fortune Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) and librarian-turned-adventurer Evy Carnahan, who married and had a son by The Mummy Returns. Other plot details remain under wraps, and the new movie is scheduled to be released on May 19, 2028.
Tomb of the Dragon Emperor grossed over $400 million USD at the box office, making it the trilogy's lowest-grossing entry, and it earned a 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
