With Lent approaching and Easter on the horizon, many viewers plan their annual rewatches of faith-based films. This year, one of the most prominent titles won’t be easy to find: The Passion of the Christ is set to leave Netflix at the end of February, removing it from streaming during the heart of the Easter season.

Mel Gibson directed the 2004 biblical drama, which chronicles Jesus’ final hours from his arrest to the crucifixion and stars Jim Caviezel. The film became a cultural event, grossing $370.8 million domestically and remaining for years the highest-grossing R-rated release in the United States as well as the most successful faith-based film ever.

Gibson has long been developing a sequel, billed as The Resurrection of the Christ, with plans to explore the three days following the crucifixion. The follow-up has been described as “massive” in scope and will be released in two parts: Part One on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, and Part Two on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027; Jim Caviezel will not return in the role of Jesus.
