Damian Marcano says he was hesitant to sign on to The Pitt at first. Coming from work on shows like Lawmen: Bass Reeves and Emperor of Ocean Park, a medical drama felt like new territory, but one clear rule set the tone before production began: a note from leading man and executive producer Noah Wyle telling everyone to "leave your ego at the door." Marcano credits that insistence with helping shape a workplace focused on the work itself, and says it played a part in the series’ success — Season 1 went on to win six Emmys.

The director describes the set as almost family-like, and calls The Pitt the first project since leaving Trinidad that he has fully put his heart into. He recalls getting the call from John Wells and creator Scott Gemmill while shooting Emperor of Ocean Park in Chicago.

Initially unsure what he could bring to a medical drama, Marcano was persuaded by Wells’s scripts, Gemmill’s experience, and a congenial meeting with Wyle — and ultimately decided to take the job.
