The Vampire Diaries surges on Netflix, ranks ninth most-watched globally
Per FlixPatrol, The Vampire Diaries is trending again on streaming platforms and is currently the ninth most-watched show globally on Netflix, Collider reported on Jan. 28, 2026 — 17 years after the series debuted. FlixPatrol’s ranking places The Vampire Diaries between WWE Raw and the South Korean reality show Single's Inferno on Netflix, with Jon Bernthal and Tessa Thompson’s thriller His & Hers leading the list.
The series is also among the top 10 on Amazon Prime in Romania for the past week, according to Collider. Developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec as an adaptation of L.J. Smith’s bestseller, The Vampire Diaries ran for eight seasons and 171 episodes from Sept. 10, 2009, to March 10, 2017.
The show follows Elena Gilbert, an orphaned teenager who falls in love with a 172-year-old vampire in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia. Leading the ensemble are Nina Dobrev (Elena Gilbert), Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore) and Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore), alongside Kat Graham, Candice King, Zach Roerig, Steven R.
McQueen, Michael Trevino and Matt Davis. The series’ 2009 premiere drew about 4.91 million viewers — the CW’s biggest at the time — and its success spawned the spin-offs The Originals and Legacies and helped fuel a surge in vampire-themed teen drama in the late 2000s and early 2010s.
