In the early 2010s, The X-Files expanded beyond television into a flood of comics, and one 2010 miniseries stands out: a six-issue crossover with Steve Niles' 30 Days of Night. The collaboration between IDW and WildStorm was co-written by Niles and Tool guitarist Adam Jones, with art by Tom Mandrake.

30 Days of Night itself began as an IDW comic in 2003 and later became a 2007 film. The story sends Mulder and Scully north to the frozen wastes of Wainright, Alaska, where a trail of decapitated bodies leads to a horde of the undead. Framed like a classic X-Files monster-of-the-week, the book follows Scully as she hunts for evidence while Mulder confronts nightmarish possibilities: vampire children, tormented centuries-old sea captains and a town that may be beyond saving.

Mandrake’s artwork is a clear highlight, and Niles and Jones build the plot with tight pacing and effective worldbuilding.
