The Zone of Interest, Jonathan Glazer’s Oscar-winning drama, will be available to stream for free next month on Kanopy. The film is a harrowing exploration of the Holocaust that refuses to show atrocities directly, instead letting screams, gunshots and industrial hums echo beyond the frame while the Höss family maintains a carefully curated domestic life beside Auschwitz.

The cast includes Christian Friedel as Rudolf Höss, Sandra Hüller as Hedwig Höss, Johann Karthaus as Klaus Höss and Luis Noah Witte as young Hans Höss. Friedel anchors the story and Hüller delivers one of the most chilling performances of the decade, while the children carry much of the film’s deepest meaning.

Several haunting scenes linger in memory: an unnamed Polish girl slips out at night to plant food for prisoners, shown in infrared as a beacon of hope, and Klaus is shown examining gold teeth pulled from prisoners’ mouths. Glazer’s deliberate refusal to depict the atrocities onscreen forces sound and implication to bear the film’s emotional weight.
