More than a decade after the series ended, The Office still circulates countless iconic lines, and not all the best laughs came from the writers. Steve Carell supplied many of Michael Scott’s most memorable moments with on-the-spot choices that fit the character perfectly.

One subtle example comes in the Season 3 episode "The Negotiation." When Darryl tells Michael to "Make it happen, Captain," Michael replies, "I will make it happen, Sergeant." That response was improvised; Craig Robinson later said he didn’t react in the moment and only realized how perfect it was when he saw the scene later.

Carell’s ad-lib in that scene shifts the tone as Michael discovers he’s been underpaid, easing an awkward realization while staying true to the boss’s awkward confidence. Small spontaneous touches like this—alongside other unscripted beats such as the "Secret Santa" moment—helped make Michael Scott both exasperating and oddly endearing throughout the show’s nine seasons.
