A friend of a friend brought me a car with a broken USB-C port after kittens dashed into the road; sudden braking sent a phone flying and the cable ripped the port out. The owner paid more than $100 for diagnostics and was quoted another $150 for a replacement and fitting, but the part was on extended backorder and the wait stretched to three months, worrying them about resale value.

I found a replacement on eBay for $30 that arrived in three days and took only minutes to install. To avoid a repeat, I suggested using USB-C magnetic swiveling breakaway connectors and fitted one from my toolbag. The two-part connector swivels roughly 180 degrees and rotates a full 360, which helps when a cable might be tugged or twisted.

Strong magnets hold it during normal use but let it disconnect cleanly if yanked, helping prevent damage; it can handle 240W without overheating, though its 480Mbps data rate isn’t suitable for external hard drives or docking stations.
