This 82% Rotten Tomatoes Apocalyptic Comedy Is Leaving Netflix Soon
This Is the End, the 2013 apocalyptic comedy from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, is set to leave Netflix in the U.S. in a matter of weeks. With an 82% Rotten Tomatoes score and a premise that pairs celebrity cameos with end-of-the-world stakes, it’s an easy title to queue while it’s still streaming.
The film sends Jay Baruchel to a Hollywood party hosted by James Franco, where the rapture begins and a group of celebrities — Rogen, Jay, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Franco and Danny McBride — find themselves trapped in Franco’s house because they are too sinful to ascend.
Each actor plays an exaggerated, often awful version of themselves: Rogen as an insecure friend, Jay as self-righteous, Hill as a friendly-seeming psychopath, and McBride as selfish and willing to sacrifice others. Comedy comes from broad set-ups — Emma Watson’s scene, a parody of The Exorcist — but the film also brings surprising emotional weight, particularly in the deteriorating friendship between Seth and Jay.
