A powerful storm brought air travel in the Northeast to a near halt, canceling more than 5,500 flights scheduled for Monday and disrupting hubs around New York City and Boston. FlightAware recorded the cancellations, and Cirium, an aviation data firm, estimated the disruption affected about one in five U.S.

flights; on a typical day roughly 1 percent are canceled. The storm forced the suspension of nearly all arrivals and departures at major regional airports: about 90 percent of flights at Kennedy, Newark and Boston Logan were canceled, while LaGuardia saw 98 percent called off.

Nationwide, more than 3,400 flights were canceled on Sunday, and roughly half as many Tuesday flights had been canceled by late Monday morning as the total continued to rise. Airlines began pulling flights as forecasts worsened, with the nation’s largest carriers suspending operations at some airports.
