Three teenagers have been charged with murder after a man who intervened to help a 14-year-old was fatally stabbed at Mernda train station in Melbourne’s north-east. Emergency crews were called on Friday evening after a fight among teenagers. A group of passersby, including a 22-year-old Mernda man, stepped in and tried to remove the 14-year-old from the scene.

Homicide Squad Detective Acting Inspector Nigel L’Estrange said the four offenders followed them and, "in what could only be described as a savage attack," assaulted the 22-year-old with fists, kicks and edged weapons. The victim suffered life-threatening injuries, was treated by paramedics and died at the scene.

Four male teens were arrested: a 16-year-old, two 17-year-olds and an 18-year-old. The 16-year-old from Whittlesea, a 17-year-old from Geelong and an 18-year-old from Mill Park have been charged with murder and armed robbery; the eldest will appear at Melbourne magistrates’ court on Sunday.
