Tim Roth says he took Hulk and Planet of the Apes roles to embarrass his kids
Tim Roth is British acting royalty who has worked with filmmakers from David Lynch to Mike Leigh. He says some less-celebrated turns, like Emil Blonsky/The Abomination in The Incredible Hulk and the villain Thade in Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes remake, were chosen to “make my kids embarrassed at school.” “I did a couple of movies like that,” he adds.
Roth appears as Beckett in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, a fascist plotting to sabotage the British economy during WW2 by flooding the country with forged banknotes. The role was originally written as an aristocrat, but Roth lowered him to a more ordinary figure so he could interact with other characters.
“What about if he's like a geography teacher? You can chat with him and he's very nice. He's very reasonable. He's just trying to help,” he says, noting Beckett believes his mission would save lives and help the country — even the planet.
