Tim Sweeney, the CEO and co-founder of Epic Games, is worth between $5 billion and $9 billion depending on the estimate, and he has been using some of that money to buy swathes of forest in North Carolina to keep the land out of developers' hands. His holdings now total roughly 50,000 acres across 15 counties, about 78 square miles.

In 2021 Sweeney gifted 7,500 acres in the Roan Highlands to the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy, the largest private land donation in North Carolina history. "This extraordinary gift ensures that these remarkable mountain landscapes will remain intact forever," said Carl Silverstein.

The Roan Highlands are noted for rare spruce-fir ecosystems and are among the most diverse regions in the southern Appalachians.
