Sunday’s BAFTAs produced an unexpected result in the Best Actor category when 33-year-old Robert Aramayo won for I Swear. It marked the first time since Jamie Bell’s 2001 victory for Billy Elliot that an actor not nominated at the Oscars took the BAFTA, and I Swear has not yet been released outside the United Kingdom.

Timothée Chalamet remains narrowly favored for the Oscar in March, but his loss in London suggested a weaker position than once thought. Leonardo DiCaprio also failed to prevail in his category. With roughly 25% of academy voters living overseas and some overlap with BAFTA voters, his setback was seen as a potential dent to his momentum; the international contingent could yet swing toward DiCaprio, Michael B.
