Timothée Chalamet's Oscar Hopes Wane After Actor Awards Upset
Timothée Chalamet lost the Actor Award to Michael B. Jordan, a turn that undercut what had looked like a clear trajectory for his praised performance as Marty Mauser in Marty Supreme. He had won the Golden Globe for the same role weeks earlier, though the Golden Globe is described as a weaker indicator of Academy success than many assume.
Signs have accumulated that an awards sweep is unlikely: Chalamet previously lost at the BAFTAs to Robert Aramayo for I Swear, and rumors of a SAG-AFTRA rift have swirled. Those whispers center partly on his polarizing acceptance speech for a Best Actor award for playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, when he said he was "really in pursuit of greatness [...] I know people don't usually talk like that [...] but I want to be one of the greats." The speech divided viewers, but the idea that it alone would cast him out of contention is called far-fetched.
As for the Oscars, the Actor Award result may bode well for Michael B.
