The Sci-Fi Romance Dubbed "Titanic in Space" Surges on Streaming Charts
Described by a reviewer as 'Titanic in space,' the film Passengers has returned to prominence by landing in the MGM+ Top 10, finding a warmer streaming audience in 2026 than it did at its 2016 release. Directed by Morten Tyldum and written by Jon Spaihts, the story follows two colonists aboard the luxury ship Avalon on a 120-year voyage.
Chris Pratt plays Jim, a mechanical engineer who wakes 90 years early, and Jennifer Lawrence plays Aurora, whom he later awakens, a choice that condemns her to the same fate without her consent. Michael Sheen appears as Arthur, the ship’s android bartender, and Laurence Fishburne plays a crew member who awakens later in the crisis.
Passengers is streaming now on MGM+; the film was released December 21, 2016, with a runtime of 116 minutes. Reviewer Perri Nemiroff described the film as split between a compelling sci-fi romance and a bolted-on space thriller, saying that clash holds it back.
