Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher (2012) streams free on Pluto TV
Tom Cruise and producer Paula Wagner fast-tracked a property whose rights they had purchased in 2005, releasing Jack Reacher in 2012 after a period that included the fraught production of Mission: Impossible III. The film opened to relatively positive reviews and helped launch Christopher McQuarrie’s move from writer to director on Cruise projects; McQuarrie subsequently directed four Mission: Impossible films — Rogue Nation, Fallout, Dead Reckoning, and The Final Reckoning.
Author Lee Child initially backed Cruise’s casting but later said the actor did not fit the physically imposing image of the character. Reacher is now portrayed by Alan Ritchson in Prime Video’s series Reacher, which has aired three seasons and is scheduled to return for a fourth.
Cruise’s movie grossed nearly $220 million worldwide against a reported $60 million budget and holds a 64% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
