Tom Hanks’ A League of Their Own (82% on Rotten Tomatoes) Shows His Range
Tom Hanks had already won Oscars for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, but an earlier role helped shift his image. Jimmy Dugan in 1992's A League of Their Own revealed a more seasoned side of Hanks. The female-led sports dramedy was his second and final collaboration with Penny Marshall and featured an ensemble including Geena Davis, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell and Téa Leoni; it grossed $132 million worldwide and holds an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Set during World War II, the film follows the creation of an all-women’s baseball league after many major leaguers were drafted. Scouts such as Ernie Capadino (Jon Lovitz) recruit sisters Dottie and Kit Keller (Geena Davis and Lori Petty) for the Rockford Peaches.
Hanks’ manager Jimmy Dugan arrives as a washed-up alcoholic and publicity draw, but the team’s on-field success and personal bonds draw him into a mentorship role. Hanks altered his usual screen persona for Dugan, adding a five o'clock shadow, a heavier build and a cynical edge.
