Movieweb reports that, after a decade, Tom Hiddleston has returned as John le Carré’s Jonathan Pine in The Night Manager Season 2, and the new series is already ranking highly on Prime Video’s streaming charts globally and in the United States following its debut a few days ago.

The second season goes off‑book because there is no second le Carré novel, with le Carré’s son Simon Cornwell helping to shepherd the series. The official synopsis says Pine, now living as Alex Goodwin and working a quiet MI6 surveillance unit in London, is drawn into a violent chain of events after spotting an old Roper mercenary. He encounters Colombian businessman Teddy Dos Santos (Diego Calva) and, with help from Roxana Bolaños (Camila Morrone), infiltrates a Colombian arms operation that involves training a guerrilla army and a conspiracy to destabilise a nation.

Critically, Season 2 has earned a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while audience reaction has been more divided over the character’s evolving sexuality. Viewer responses quoted in the report range from “Superb. Brilliant acting, exciting story, and a great addition to the franchise,” to praise calling the season “darker and at the same time sexy.” A third season is already said to be in the works.
