Too many, bro? Broaching the subject of men’s lapel messaging at the Oscars
While the eyes might be the window to the soul, lapels were doing much of the talking on the Oscars red carpet. Adrien Brody wore an astronomically large brooch titled Ulysses, arguably as big as the James Joyce tome is thick, and Pedro Pascal distracted from his newly bare chin with a silk and feather Chanel Camélia brooch.
Javier Bardem used his lapel arguably most effectively with his “No a la Guerra” (No to War) badge in dripping blood-red letters and a pin showing the figure of Handala, the cartoon boy created by political cartoonist Naji Al Ali that has become an enduring symbol of Palestinian resistance.
Other choices ranged from symbolic to decorative: Leonardo DiCaprio wore a vintage Boucheron bumble bee pin from 1964, which some saw as a nod to Re:wild; Wagner Moura wore a custom Andre Lasmar brooch inspired by the Dove of Peace; and Michael B Jordan arrived at the Vanity Fair after-party wearing three brooches on his brown suit.
