Top 30 AI agents mix functions and autonomy

MIT published an index of 30 leading AI agents and mapped their functions, origins, and autonomy levels. The largest share of systems targets enterprise workflows, but the list ranges from chat-first assistants to browser-based tools. Agents featured include Anthropic Claude (and Claude Code), Google Gemini (and Gemini CLI), Manus AI, OpenAI ChatGPT (and ChatGPT Agent, Codex, AgentKit), Perplexity, Alibaba MobileAgent, ByteDance Agent TARS, Perplexity Comet, IBM watsonx Orchestrate, Microsoft 365 Copilot, SAP Joule Studio, Salesforce Agentforce, and ServiceNow AI Agents.

The researchers grouped the agents into three main categories. Enterprise workflow agents (13 of the 30) are platforms with agentic features for automating business tasks, with examples such as Microsoft 365 Copilot and ServiceNow Agent. Chat applications with agentic tools (12) are primarily turn-based interfaces with broad tool access, including Claude Code and agents embedded in products like Manus AI and ChatGPT Agent.
