Tottenham 1-3 Crystal Palace: Van de Ven red puts Spurs nearer relegation
Tottenham Hotspur remain only one point clear of the Premier League relegation zone after an awful 3-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace. Positive results for West Ham and Nottingham Forest had ramped up the pressure on Spurs to win what was seen as a winnable fixture, and there is fresh uncertainty over head coach Igor Tudor after three games in charge.
The match swung early. On the half-hour mark Palace thought they had taken the lead through Ismaila Sarr, but the strike was ruled out for an offside margin. Tottenham then opened the scoring when Archie Gray retrieved a loose ball from a corner and cut it back for Dominic Solanke to finish from close range.
The lead lasted only minutes. Micky van de Ven, named captain in Romero’s absence, tugged Sarr’s arm in the area, gave away a penalty and was sent off; Sarr scored from 12 yards to level. In the eight minutes added at the end of the first half Palace turned the game, Jorgen Strand Larsen finishing after an interception and Wharton then feeding Sarr for a third.
