Tottenham look set to hijack Aston Villa's proposed deal for Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher, Goal reports. Spurs have bid £34.7m ($47m) for the 25-year-old; the offer is expected to be accepted and Gallagher is said to be keen on the move.

Fabrizio Romano had reported that Villa and Atletico had verbally agreed a loan, but David Ornstein of The Athletic states no agreement was reached and Gallagher will instead head to Tottenham; Villa had "strong interest" in the midfielder. Gallagher joined Atletico in summer 2024 for a fee worth up to £38m, made 50 appearances and scored four goals in his first season under Diego Simeone, and has often been used from the bench this term with just four La Liga starts so far.

If the move progresses quickly, Gallagher could make his Tottenham debut on Saturday when Thomas Frank's side host relegation-threatened West Ham in the Premier League; if not, more than two weeks of the January transfer window remain. Champions League squad changes cannot be made until after the league phase concludes, so a European debut before the knockouts would not be possible.
