Tracy Spiridakos on Hailey Upton’s new life as an FBI agent

Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) returned during the three-part crossover with Chicago Fire and Chicago Med, and viewers learned how she’s fared since leaving the Windy City. Ghosted by her ex-husband Jay Halstead after he went undercover investigating drug cartels in Bolivia, Upton appeared worn down before deciding she needed a fresh start.

In the Season 11 finale she handed in her badge to Hank Voight and began looking into new career options. Upton researched jobs at the FBI, FEMA and the DEA, then packed up and hailed a cab to the airport; the episode faded to black before she revealed her destination.

The crossover resolved that mystery: she moved to Detroit and is now a Special Agent on an FBI drug task force. Spiridakos said she could see Upton landing in that role, since those were the kinds of jobs Upton had been considering. The crossover’s plot opened with an alert about a commercial aircraft over Lake Michigan that went radio silent and carried a known drug smuggler.
