Trailer: Takashi Miike's Blazing Fists Turns to MMA Prison Drama
Legendary filmmaker Takashi Miike is the director of Blazing Fists, a new MMA-infused drama inspired by fighter Mikuru Asakura’s autobiography Street Legend. The first trailer frames the film as a brutal, action-focused story that shifts Miike’s attention from his earlier horror work to mixed martial arts.
The plot follows troubled teens Ikuto and Ryoma, who meet in juvenile detention and plan to fight their way to freedom by entering Asakura’s Breaking Down tournament. The synopsis emphasizes that the characters must confront their pasts outside the ring before they can succeed inside it.
Blazing Fists premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, where critics described it as a “pulpy sports crime movie” that combines prison drama, boxing and mob elements. Coverage also notes the film’s use of intense anime and manga influences and occasional homages to Japanese cinema of the 1990s and 2000s, and a Letterboxd five-star response praised its entertainment value and memorable fight moments.
