Training with my 87-year-old mother changed how I view aging
My 62-year-old self, a trainer, has long exercised with my 87-year-old mother, and a recent mobility drill reminded me how our bodies change. When I asked her to get up from the floor she struggled, so I guided her patiently until she could do it herself. That moment made me rethink not just movement but the mindset I want as I age.
Decades of shared workouts shaped that mindset. When I was 34 she asked to be strong and independent, so I made a 30-minute step-and-strength video she did five days a week. The routine quietly became a meaningful part of our relationship, a way to check in and share progress.
Now her plan focuses on strength, balance, mobility, and stretching so she can handle everyday tasks like getting in and out of a chair, climbing stairs, opening heavy doors, carrying groceries, and getting up from the floor. Training her has taught me to slow down and embrace modifications.
