Triple Frontier Still Stands Out Among Netflix Originals
Seven years after its debut, Triple Frontier remains arguably Netflix's best original movie. The film pairs a high-caliber cast led by Ben Affleck with an action-packed story that folds deeper themes into its narrative. Despite being one of Netflix's most-viewed movies of 2019 — racking up 52 million viewers in its first month — it has largely become a footnote in the streamer's history.
Triple Frontier opens when former Special Forces operative Santiago "Pope" Garcia (Oscar Isaac) learns a drug lord has stashed $75 million in cash in the Colombian jungle. Pope recruits teammates, including Tom "Redfly" Davis (Affleck), only to find far more money than expected.
Director J.C. Chandor stages a nail-biting thriller, and Affleck's performance forms the bedrock of the film's conflict; greed drives Redfly into obsession, bloody shootouts and ultimately his death. The cast also includes Pedro Pascal and Charlie Hunnam, and early versions of the project attached names such as Channing Tatum, Tom Hardy and Tom Hanks.
