President Trump announced on Saturday morning that he will impose a 10 percent tariff on Denmark and seven other European countries as part of an effort to secure a deal to buy Greenland, writing the decision in a social media post.

He said Denmark, which oversees Greenland, will be hit with a 10 percent tariff on all goods sent to the United States beginning on Feb. 1, and named Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Britain, the Netherlands and Finland as also subject to the duty. He added that the tariff would increase to 25 percent on June 1 if his demands were not met, saying it would remain in place "until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland."

The United States currently charges a 10 percent tariff on British imports and a 15 percent tariff on imports from the European Union after limited trade deals last year; the new measures would presumably be imposed on top of those rates, and it remains to be seen how other trading partners would respond.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
