Trump calls UK Chagos deal 'an act of GREAT STUPIDITY' and reiterates Greenland claim
US president Donald Trump said the UK’s plan to cede sovereignty over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius was “an act of GREAT STUPIDITY” and cited the decision as one of the reasons he has pressed for the United States to acquire Greenland, writing on Truth Social. In the Truth Social post Trump said the UK was “planning to give away the Island of Diego Garcia, the site of a vital U.S.
Military Base … FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER”, and added that China and Russia had noticed “this act of total weakness”. He wrote the move was “another in a very long line of National Security reasons why Greenland has to be acquired.” The UK‑Mauritius agreement, signed in May 2025, would cede sovereignty to Mauritius while leasing Diego Garcia for 99 years for continued joint US‑UK use, establish a £40m fund for displaced Chagossians and commit at least £120m a year to Mauritius over the lease—payments the Guardian says total at least £13bn.
The agreement has not been ratified by the UK government and has not been implemented into domestic law.
