Trump's demand that Netflix fire Rice warns corporate America
President Donald Trump has demanded that Netflix unseat board member Susan Rice as the company seeks his approval for a planned purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery. Corporate governance is normally separate from the White House, but in Trump 2.0 the president has been telling companies to fire people or take other actions he favors.
The demands are an extraordinary use of power, even if he does not always get what he wants. Trump cannot by himself stop Warner Bros. Discovery from selling to Netflix or Paramount, but he can instruct Attorney General Pam Bondi to sue on antitrust grounds. He has made clear he expects Bondi to act on his behalf, so he can make a deal more difficult if he chooses.
Rice, who held senior roles in the Clinton, Obama, and Biden administrations, said on a podcast that 'elites' and 'corporate interests' who accommodated Trump would one day 'be held accountable'.
