President Trump publicly praised demonstrators in Tehran while simultaneously denouncing people protesting in Minnesota, The New York Times reported. On Tuesday he wrote, “KEEP PROTESTING - TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!!” and decried “the senseless killing of protesters,” comments the paper says were meant for those in Tehran.

Sixty-three minutes earlier, Mr. Trump called the Minnesota demonstrators “anarchists and professional agitators” and warned that “THE DAY OF RECKONING & RETRIBUTION IS COMING!” The Times noted contrasts in his response: he discussed possible military strikes over Iran’s brutal crackdown — with a death toll in Iran “said to be in the thousands” — and vowed “help is on its way” to Iranian protesters, while he dismissed concerns about the shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent in Minnesota and his administration moved to block outside inquiries into that killing.

Amy Hawthorne, a former State Department official, told the paper that he “frames each protest movement in terms of himself.” The article also said Mr. Trump’s approach has been selective abroad, citing his handling of Venezuela, and described domestic fallout: six federal prosecutors resigned after the Justice Department sought to investigate Ms.

Good’s widow rather than the officer who fired, Todd Blanche said “there is currently no basis for a criminal civil rights investigation,” and Ms. Noem announced she was sending hundreds more federal officers into Minnesota.
