President Trump announced he was erasing the scientific finding that greenhouse gases endanger human health and the environment, ending the federal government’s legal authority to control pollution that is heating the planet. The move removes limits on carbon dioxide, methane and four other greenhouse gases that scientists say are supercharging heat waves, droughts, wildfires and other extreme weather and overturns the 2009 endangerment finding that had underpinned E.P.A.

regulations. At the White House Mr. Trump called the rule a “disastrous Obama-era policy,” and E.P.A. administrator Lee Zeldin described the step as “the single largest deregulatory action in the history of the United States.” The administration argued the finding had harmed the economy and said repealing it would ease restrictions on automakers and other businesses, estimating savings of about $1 trillion.

Environmental groups warned of health and environmental consequences. The Environmental Defense Fund said the repeal is expected to increase U.S.
