At the World Economic Forum in Davos, President Donald Trump said he was seeking "immediate negotiations" to take over Greenland, asking the packed auditorium if they wanted him to say a few words about "a place called Greenland" and warning allies of economic consequences if they refused.

Trump told the audience he was ruling out seizing the Arctic territory by force but added that the United States could use "excessive strength and force" if necessary. His remarks prompted widespread discussion at the forum, with diplomats and officials debating possible responses; Rasmus Jarlov, chairman of Denmark’s parliamentary defense committee, said he was "glad he’s ruling out military force." Over the weekend Trump had announced steep new tariffs to press European countries to negotiate over Greenland, then later posted on Truth Social that after a "very productive" meeting with Mark Rutte they had "formed the framework of a future deal" for the Arctic and he would not impose the tariffs scheduled for February 1st.

Further details were not available. The U.S. also announced it had moved 150 Islamic State fighters from a detention facility in northeastern Syria to an unspecified "secure location in Iraq," the U.S. Central Command said, and that it might eventually move up to 7,000 more.
