President Trump announced early Monday that he was sending Tom Homan to Minneapolis after the Saturday killing of Alex Pretti, a U.S. citizen with no criminal record, by immigration agents and amid videos and protests that contradicted the government’s initial account. The White House narrative had begun to unravel after videos showed Mr.

Pretti pinned down when agents opened fire. Stephen Miller, who helped craft Mr. Trump’s immigration policy, had called Mr. Pretti a “terrorist” and told other officials, including Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, to call him an “assassin,” remarks that the administration later softened.

Allies and advisers urged a change on the ground; Fox & Friends co‑host Brian Kilmeade repeated the message to send Mr. Homan multiple times, and within minutes Mr. Trump said he would dispatch him. Mr. Trump told Fox News that Gregory Bovino, a Border Patrol official who had been directing operations in Minneapolis, was out, saying “Bovino is pretty good, but he’s a pretty out‑there kind of guy” and “Maybe it wasn’t good here.” Mr.

Homan met with the president in the Oval Office and, according to the White House, was on a plane within hours. Ms. Leavitt, the press secretary, said, “President Trump asked Tom Homan to fly to Minnesota, because Tom Homan is the perfect man for the job,” and that he left immediately to take over day‑to‑day operations.
