Trump says tech giants must cover data center power costs
US President Donald Trump pledged to make major tech companies “pick up the tab” for their power usage so everyday Americans do not face higher electricity bills, he said on his social media platform Truth Social. Trump blamed Democrats for surging household electricity bills and said he would work with major American tech firms to “secure their commitment to the American People,” with an announcement expected in the coming weeks.
The POTUS said Microsoft, with whom his team has been working, will make major changes beginning this week “to ensure that Americans don’t ‘pick up the tab’ for their power consumption, in the form of paying higher utility bills.” Data center power demand has been rising: Visual Capitalist reported that in 2025 US data center demand accounted for 5.2% of America’s total power use (224 TWh), up 21% from the previous year, and McKinsey & Company projected consumption could top 600 TWh by 2030.
The International Energy Agency estimates AI-focused data center electricity demand is growing at about 30% annually versus 9% for conventional server workloads; Network Installers said cooling accounts for 30%–40% of facility energy use while servers and IT equipment consume roughly 40%–60%.
