People reported that Tony Dokoupil interviewed President Donald Trump in Detroit on Jan. 13, 2026, and that during the CBS Evening News segment Trump said, “If she got in, you probably wouldn’t have a job right now… You wouldn’t have this job, certainly whatever the hell they’re paying you.” Dokoupil initially shrugged off the comment and later closed the interview by saying, “For the record, I do think I’d have this job even if the other guys won,” to which Trump replied, “Yeah, but at a lesser salary.” Dokoupil began his tenure as CBS Evening News anchor on Jan.

5 after being chosen by Bari Weiss, who described him as "the person to win" back viewers' "trust in the media" with his "old-school journalistic values." He has been traveling to major cities in his first month as anchor and has also interviewed members of the administration, including border czar Tom Homan and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Weiss has drawn controversy since becoming editor-in-chief, including her decision to pull a 60 Minutes segment about CECOT in December 2025; 60 Minutes correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi said in a private email that the choice was “not an editorial decision" but "a political one,” an email first obtained by The Wall Street Journal and later reported by other outlets.
