Trump threatens to seize Greenland, saying ‘whether they like it or not’
President Trump again threatened on Friday to forcibly annex Greenland, saying he was “going to do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not” at a White House event. The event, where Mr. Trump hosted oil and gas executives, focused on his plans to have American companies exploit Venezuela’s oil under the threat of a military blockade.
He argued the United States must dominate strategically important neighboring countries and said, “If we don’t do it, Russia or China will take over Greenland,” a claim the report calls false while noting that Russia and China are active in the Arctic Circle but Greenland is not ringed by their ships and the United States has a military base there.
Mr. Trump warned Danish and Greenlandic officials, “I would like to make a deal the easy way, but if we don’t do it the easy way we’re going to do it the hard way.” The report notes that the United States’ taking Greenland by force would undercut the central NATO principle that an attack on any member is treated as an attack on all, a principle Mr.
