Trump Weighs Second Strike on Iran That Could Be Deadlier
President Trump is considering committing the United States to another military campaign against Iran, a decision that could ignite a conflict longer, deadlier and more dangerous than last year’s 12-day war. Last June the United States joined a campaign Israel had begun with the goal of bombing Iranian nuclear facilities; within days of the U.S.
strikes, all sides agreed to a cease-fire and there were no American casualties. Now the Pentagon is carrying out the largest military buildup in the Middle East in two decades, and Mr. Trump is weighing a far more expansive operation led by U.S. forces without saying publicly what he hopes to achieve.
"I guess I can say I am considering that," he told reporters. Officials and analysts ask whether a campaign would again focus on nuclear sites, target Iran’s ballistic missile arsenal, or seek regime change — a course that could bring untold civilian deaths and a wider regional war.
