President Trump rescinded his invitation for Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada to join the Board of Peace, an organization Mr. Trump founded to oversee a Gaza peace deal and that he has sought to expand into an institution rivaling the United Nations, The New York Times reported.

The move followed high‑profile remarks by Mr. Carney at the World Economic Forum urging smaller nations to resist Mr. Trump’s America First doctrine and denouncing “authoritarianism and exclusion,” according to the article. Though Mr. Trump did not explain the decision, the Times said his announcement appeared to be a response to Mr.

Carney’s speeches. Mr. Trump posted a message framed as a letter saying, “Please let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada’s joining.” The Times reported that Mr. Carney had received an invitation last week and his staff said he planned to accept, but he distanced himself after it emerged that members would be charged more than $1 billion for a permanent seat and that other Western leaders had declined to join.

The paper also noted the board’s charter gives Mr. Trump broad powers, including the authority to veto decisions, approve the agenda, invite and remove members, dissolve the board and designate his successor. The public snub deepens strains in U.S.‑Canada relations, the Times said, describing a year of aggressive U.S.
