Trump’s Call to ‘Nationalize’ Elections Adds to State Officials’ Alarm
President Trump’s declaration that he wants to “nationalize” voting has intensified tensions between the federal government and state election officials. While the Constitution leaves the mechanics of elections to the states, generations of secretaries of state have relied on federal intelligence, cybersecurity and other support.
Election officials say Mr. Trump’s push to overturn the 2020 election, his continued false claims about that contest, the placement of election skeptics in influential roles and efforts to find evidence of widespread fraud have eroded trust. They point to the F.B.I.’s seizure of ballots and records from a Fulton County election office, the Justice Department’s lawsuits seeking full voter rolls from nearly half the states, a letter from Attorney General Pam Bondi to Minnesota officials and the director of national intelligence’s involvement in the Fulton County matter.
