Trump's Unpredictable Style Gives Leverage but Has a Cost
Nytimes reports that President Trump’s negotiating style — marked by threats, retreats and abrupt shifts — has yielded results for the administration but is wearing on allies and adversaries a year into his second term. Some partners are weighing waiting him out or turning away rather than enduring the abrupt starts, stops and humiliations that can accompany engagement with him.
Timothy L. O’Brien, a biographer of Mr. Trump, said, “What Trump is identifying as unpredictability is actually anxiety about his electoral prospects.” The Times recounts instances such as Mr. Trump’s abrupt reversal in negotiations with Harvard, withdrawing an agreement not to seek a $200 million fine and instead demanding $1 billion, and his earlier threat to seize Greenland from Denmark, which infuriated allies and led some to question U.S.
reliability.
