Tiny Core Linux is an extremely small, modular distribution with three editions: Core, a 17MB terminal-only image; TinyCore, a 23MB desktop using the FLTK/FLWM environment; and CorePlus, a 248MB desktop that includes seven desktop choices. It can run entirely in RAM when used as a live system, and modules let users pick only the components they need.

The project is not aimed at complete beginners. It rewards some familiarity with Linux or a willingness to learn, but its tiny footprint brings very fast performance and practical uses: carrying an OS on a USB flash drive, reviving old hardware, building a kiosk, setting up a child’s PC, or providing a compact environment for experimenting with Linux.

A live Tiny Core instance cannot install until the tc-install extension is added, which is why many opt for CorePlus; that edition includes a GUI installer and walks through options such as Frugal, USB-HDD or USB-ZIP—choose Frugal for a standard drive and USB-HDD or USB-ZIP for a flash device.
