Trying follows Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) as they navigate parenthood after finalizing the adoption of siblings Princess and Tyler. The series made a sharp turn after Season 3 by jumping forward six years in Season 4, shifting attention from the mechanics of adoption to the daily work of raising the family they now have.

The time jump creates fresh drama, most notably in Princess’s storyline. At 16 she begins searching for her birth mother, Kat (Charlotte Riley), questions she couldn’t have fully formed at ten. Because Princess already has an established bond with Nikki, that search adds emotional complexity without erasing their relationship, and the advance in time allows other characters to grow in tandem.

Season 5, expected later this year, will pick up after Kat turns up on the family’s doorstep and explore the fallout as Tyler, now 12, is better able to understand the situation.
