Turtle Team-Up makes TMNT Magic set more welcoming for beginners
Magic: The Gathering is one of the most successful and popular tabletop games in the world, but it’s also one of the most complex. Over its 30-year history, Wizards of the Coast has released Starter Kits, the entry-level set Magic: The Gathering Foundations, and Beginner Boxes to help new players learn.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set takes a different tack by using a cooperative game mode to make learning the rules easier. Turtle Team-Up lets two to four players work together to fight bad guys from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and includes a rules reference book that teaches everything a group needs.
Players each use a preconstructed deck—one for each Turtle—take turns at the same time, and share a life total while trying to reduce bosses like Shredder and Krang to zero. The mono-color decks are simple and introduce archetypes: Leonardo focuses on alliance and sneak mechanics, Michelangelo on food and mutagen tokens, and Donatello on artifact synergy.
