Television often stretches stories past their natural end as studios chase reliable franchises and fans clamor for more. Many series deliver a tight, satisfying first season only to dilute that success with later installments that repeat plot beats or expand the scope in ways that undermine the original concept.

Heroes launched with a near-perfect first season, balancing superhero tropes and mainstream drama and turning Zachary Quinto, Masi Oka, and Hayden Panettiere into breakout names. Its finale left Sylar alive, and subsequent seasons, plus the Heroes: Reborn revival, saw the show and creator Tim Kring constantly shifting course.

Stranger Things likewise felt like a long, self-contained movie in season 1: the Duffer brothers used an eight-episode format to tell a cinematic, small-town sci-fi mystery that wrapped its main threads neatly. The later seasons broadened the scope dramatically and, critics argue, eroded the original charm.
