Two killed and six injured in shooting outside Salt Lake City Mormon meetinghouse
Two people were killed and six others were injured in a shooting outside a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, the police said. At least one suspect was at large, authorities added.
Dozens of people were attending a funeral service inside the meetinghouse at the time, the police said. Brian Redd, chief of the Salt Lake City Police Department, said the shooting appeared to have started after an altercation in the building’s parking lot and that investigators "don’t believe this was a targeted attack against a religion." Three of the injured were in critical condition, the police said, and the condition of the other three was not known.
Officers were pursuing leads and reviewing surveillance footage, the police said. Glen Mills, a police spokesman, said a suspect’s vehicle was last seen driving north on a road next to the church, prompting a search covering several blocks, and that authorities had a grainy image of a suspect getting into the vehicle. Chief Redd said some people had been detained but declined to provide further details and that it was too early to comment on motives. The Church said it was cooperating with law enforcement.
